Logo Design - Fika

Client: Fika Swedish Coffee Break, Wanaka

Brief: To create a new logo for a company rebrand (from Nordavia to Fika) that had a simple black and white colour scheme, with a bold look.

Wanaka specialist bakeshop Fika wanted a logo that would represent a strong brand to the market place for their bakeshop, as well as their high-end wholesale biscuit market.

Called Fika (a concept in Swedish culture which translates to mean "to drink coffee", often accompanied with pastries or sandwiches) we needed to not only portray the company name in the logo, but closely link it with the pronounciation of the word and definition, for a New Zealand market who did not yet understand this concept.

If people cannot easily recognise how to say a brand name, that can be a barrier to them talking about it. Companies have even created whole campaigns around educating people on how to say their brand name, to ensure that people are happy to freely talk about (and then promote) their brand. A local example of this is New Zealand cider company Old Mout. They ran a launch campaign that had slogans such as 'Old Mout (rhymes with fruit)' to remove this potential barrier.

To ensure that this was not a barrier for Fika, we included a phonetic description (Fee-KA) within the logo itself, in a lighter version of the same font used for the name and description.
